SAN BERNARDINO >> The community is invited to attend the Little League Western Regional Softball and Baseball Tournaments at Al Houghton Stadium at the Little League Western Region Headquarters, located at 6707 Little League Dr., San Bernardino. Both tournaments, which are free to the public, involve state champion All-Star teams of girls and boys, league ages 10 to 12, from throughout the Western United States. Parking is free but spaces are limited. The softball regional — to be held July 22 through 29 — will see one team advance to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon. This is the sixth year the regional tournament has been held in San Bernardino. “If you’ve never attended the softball regional, you’re in for a real treat," said Dave Bonham, director of the Little League Western Region. "These girls bring excitement to the game through their enthusiasm on and off the field, as well as through their talent and knowledge of the game. This tournament not only creates lifetime memories for these girls, but it helps build confidence in pursing this wonderful game as an avenue to gain a college education.” The baseball regional, which takes place Aug. 7 through 13, will see two teams — one from the West bracket and one from the Northwest bracket — move on to the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This is the 46th year the baseball regional has taken place in San Bernardino. Some of the individuals who have played in the Western Regional Baseball Tournament and then enjoyed professional careers in sports include: Sean Burroughs, Darnell Coles, Hank Conger and Ken Hubbs in Major League Baseball and Turk Schonert, Brian Sipe and Marques Tuiasosopo in the National Football League. Both tournaments are entertaining for the fans, as they witness both softball and baseball being played at its purist form – for the love of the game. It is not uncommon to see the players from both teams step off the field following a game and then spend time together. Regardless of the final score, lasting friendships are made from their week in San Bernardino. Although winning is nice, it is not what Little League focuses on. Instead, Little League uses softball and baseball as a platform to help children develop life skills. Softball and baseball embodies the discipline of teamwork. Under caring leadership, Little League’s movement is dedicated to helping children become good and decent citizens, helping to enrich their lives as they continue to move toward finding their place in the world. Little League establishes the values of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play. Mark your calendars now for both regional tournaments and come out and show your support for these children who are living their young dreams and learning valuable life skills, simultaneously.
