As summer break is coming to an end for many of the children in the Colton area, Aug. 1 was their last opportunity to watch a movie in the park. On this warm Friday night, many children and adults gathered at Fleming Park to watch The Lego Movie on the big screen, hosted by Colton Community Service. Many of the children received a bag of goodies since it was the last night to attend. Recreation Coordinator Felipe Vega Jr. shares, "This is just to give the community somewhere to go and hangout. The best thing is seeing the kids having a good time, smiling. Working with the community and giving back is the best part. We just put on great events for people to enjoy. I love the huge screen at this event. In general, I love how everyone is having a good time, smiling." While Will Griffith plays Legos with some of the kids there, he shares, "I'm with Play-Well. The Colton city contacted us. It's a cross promotion thing. I've been working since October. Working with Legos, there's so much fun being able to move so easily. I like the physics with it. It's really cool!" Watching over the kids is volunteer Azucena Zepeda who shares, "What I like most about this event is all the kids at the jumper. I like the fact that they come all happy and stuff. It cheers you up, you know!" Kids that attended every movie showing throughout the summer won a shirt, popcorn, pencils, candy, glow in the dark sticks, and other small goodies. They also had the opportunity to play the Nintendo Wii before the movie started and dance along to the songs on the game Just Dance. Cino Jimenez said, "I heard about the event through the Colton magazine. I just wanna have fun with my kids and family. You know, be happy." Sabrina Lozano shares, "I heard about it through Facebook. I came here for my kids and for a family night. We're here for the Lego Movie. This is the 3rd one we came to!" Nicole Ownbey said, "It's a good community event for the kids. I like to take them to kid-friendly events that don't cost anything. I usually check the local city of Colton website for these events. I've been so busy with work I haven't able to make many of them." Senior Recreation Leader Robert Saldana said, "We have a series once a year and it's usually in the summer. We try to get Latin based bands because the culture in Colton is mainly leaning towards that. We have to go with what the company and what ever movie is available. We try to get the newer ones. My favorite we had was Emperor's New Groove we showed this summer. It has a lot of dark humor that kids don't quite understand. Unfortunately, this is the last movie we are showing for this summer."
