Grant Elementary School celebrated Grandparents Day on Sept. 9. Over one-hundred grandparents participated. Grandparents enjoyed lunch with their grandchildren followed by grandparents reading, visiting their grandchild’s classroom, and spending quality time with their loved ones. Grandparents day goes all the way back to 1978, when President Jimmy Carter signed the day into law. It was initiated mostly by West Virginian Marian Lucille Herndon McQuad who had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. It is a day to appreciate and honor grandparents, for grandparents to spend time with their children's children, and for the younger children to recognize the strength and guidance their elders can offer. Grandparents are our heritage and are essential members of our families and community. The day was a way to honor our grandparents, spend time and have fun.
