This year’s first day of autumn may not feature changing leaves or a crisp cool breeze, but this Saturday marks the official start of the Fall season. The season of shorter days and longer nights; apple picking at Oak Glen; roasting gooey marshmallows over a backyard bonfire; trick-or-treating in a homemade costume; and Thanksgiving turkey. Hopefully, this season brings many fun-filled family moments of movie nights at the drive-in, pumpkin carving and hot chocolate. If you’re looking for a way to kick off the Fall season, the Colton Area Museum is holding a Halloween-themed craft competition that may be perfect for you.

The Colton Area Museum is conducting a Día De Los Muertos Tombstone Design contest for residents to get creative and crafty this Autumn season. The museum is asking for residents to design and assemble the most creative tombstone for the chance to be named Best of Show on October 27, 2018.

Artists can create their tombstone out of materials like Styrofoam, foam board or cardboard, but the Colton Area Museum Vice President, Christina Perris, urges participants to be creative and most of all to have fun.

“Make it creepy.  Make it comical.  Make it inspirational.  Make it something you’ll be proud to show everyone,” Perris said.

Residents who want to participate in the contest can bring their completed tombstone displays to the Colton Area Museum at 380 North La Cadena Drive during regular hours Wednesdays and Fridays from 1-4 pm and Saturdays from 11-2 pm beginning now with their completed submission form and fee.

Will you design your tombstone with a “Nightmare Before Christmas” or “Rocky Horror Picture Show” theme? Or perhaps you’ll pull inspiration from Día De Los Muertos elements to design your tombstone. Either way, this contest is an opportunity to showcase your creativity and begin this Halloween season.

Visitors of the museum will vote on their favorite displays from October 3 through October 27 and the winners will be announced during a Día De Los Muertos celebration on October 27 from 1 to 3 pm at the Colton Area Museum. For more information visit the Colton Area Museum’s website or call Christina Perris at (909) 648-5768.

Bust out the art supplies and start planning your designs now. Get your friends and family in on the competition too! Good luck and happy crafting to all participants!
