Blood drives continued in Colton on July 28 as a bus sat parked and waiting for donors.
Pre-registration is not required, though it is available online, and anyone is welcome to donate by simply walking up and signing a form.
Next, donors are given a quick physical and will answer a series of questions pertaining to their health.
Then, they are taken to the rear of the bus, where the blood is drawn. Recovery is helped along with a snack of either cookies and crackers as well as juice and water. The juice helps get blood sugar back up while the body recovers from the blood donation.
“Hopefully 18 to 20 people will donate,” said Robert Bahler, a staff member. “It’s such a critical time. Weather impacts the supply too.”
Donations across the nation are lowest in the summer, since at least 20 percent of donations are given by students from high schools and universities, which are mostly empty in the summer months. In fact, donations are down about 80,000 nationwide, a large number.
Since every donation helps to save lives, LifeStream and American Red Cross strongly encourages donations, especially in the summer months.
