The nomination period for the Nov. 4 General Election is currently open now through Friday, Aug. 8. The nomination period officially opened Monday, July 14.
Colton’s General Municipal Election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4. There are four offices open for election on the City Council, including: Mayor, District 1, District 2, and District 4.
Those interested in running for one of these offices must file the official nomination papers with the city clerk’s office. Official nomination papers will not be accepted after Aug. 8.
At the time nomination papers are issued, city clerk staff will check the voter registration status of each nominee and provide nominees with a Candidate Handbook that includes all information necessary to run for office.
Interested nominees are asked to set aside approximately 30 minutes to fill out paperwork and ask questions. Those wishing to make an appointment may do so in order to ensure the chief deputy city clerk or the deputy clerk will be available upon the nominee’s arrival.
A non-refundable $25 filing fee is due at the time a nominee pulls nomination papers.
Those who choose to submit an optional Candidate’s Statement of Qualifications to be printed in the Sample Ballot will be asked to also pay an additional cost which is due upon the return of papers.
The Form 501: Candidate Intention Statement must also be filed immediately as it is the declaration of an individual to run for office. All candidates must file Form 501 prior to soliciting contributions.
Those candidates and/or committees planning to receive or spend more than $1,000 during their campaign will also need to file a Form 410: Statement of Organization.
Before any expenditures or contributions, candidates must contact the city clerk’s office for clarification regarding current election laws covering campaign funds.
