Salvation Army and City of San Bernardino Unite Families

The Salvation Army and the City of San Bernardino announced a successful family reunification case that demonstrates the power of community collaboration in addressing homelessness. Recently, Michelle (last name withheld to respect her privacy) and her daughter Emily were reunited with their family in Springfield, Missouri, ending months of housing instability and beginning a new chapter of hope and stability. What began as an emergency response to homelessness became a comprehensive solution focused on family connection and long-term well-being. Michelle initially entered San Bernardino's motel voucher program, providing immediate safety and stability for her and her daughter. Recognizing the program's role as a temporary resource, The Salvation Army's team worked closely with her to find a sustainable long-term solution. Through case management, the team determined that the best path forward was family reunification with Michelle's adult daughter, Sarah, who welcomed the opportunity to provide a home. However, without financial assistance for travel, this remained out of reach. "This story exemplifies what's possible when we look beyond the immediate crisis and focus on what truly matters, keeping families together," said Mercedes Pacheco, director of social services for the Salvation Army.  "Through our partnership with the City of San Bernardino, we addressed not just homelessness but the core need for family connection and stability. Michelle’s gratitude and hope remind us why we do this work every day," Pacheco added. By leveraging their partnership, the Salvation Army and the City of  San Bernardino secured Greyhound bus tickets, enabling Michelle and her daughter to make the trip. The family was welcomed by relatives in Missouri, marking the start of renewed stability and opportunity. Michelle expressed deep gratitude to both organizations for their collaborative support throughout this journey. "Cases like Michelle’s reaffirm that homelessness isn’t insurmountable when community partners commit to comprehensive solutions," said Pacheco. "The City of San Bernardino's motel voucher program provided the safety net Michelle needed, and together, we turned that temporary shelter into a step toward lasting stability."
