Associate Pastor John Braxton from Church of Fire in Christ in Grand Terrace heads a community effort of two dozen service-oriented groups who are committed to reach the needs of the community for Christ. Last month’s “Community in Unity” event at Veterans Park in Colton was so successful that his collaboration efforts are turning into a monthly outreach specifically for Colton residents. “People need Jesus,” Braxton said, “They need to know we're here to help them. We're here to offer many resources to better themselves.” Braxton, along with several well-known service providers including Catholic Charities, Inland Empire Health Plan and the County of San Bernardino, teamed up with Councilmember Dr. Luis Gonzalez to launch the program. As a result, close to 200 attendees from the Veterans Park neighborhood came to connect. “This is one of the most effective outreach programs I’ve been associated with,” Gonzalez said. “This collaboration effort reaches out to people in their homes and invites them to come to see what programs are available.” Community in Unity will be having its second event Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Veterans Park and all Colton residents are invited to attend. “Come one, come all,” Braxton said.
