The West Valley Water District (WVWD) Board of Directors in partnership with the Water Awareness Water Education Committee (WEWAC), a consortium of Southern California cities, water agencies, and water education professionals that work together to promote water conservation and education, announced that six classrooms in the Rialto Unified School District received $1,200 to send 5th graders to science camp.
“It’s incredible to see the impact that our partnership with the Water Education Water Awareness Committee can have on our young water stewards,” said WVWD Board President Greg Young. “The funds have provided valuable educational opportunities for our local students.”
The funds were provided through the WEWAC Edubucks program, which provides financial support to teachers seeking to facilitate creative classroom projects that increase student awareness of the importance of water. The funding has allowed over 500 fifth-grade students to attend a science camp at Camp Skyland Ranch in the San Jacinto Mountains.
“We are proud to be a part of the Water Education Water Awareness Committee and to bring this money to local schools in our area,” said Angela Garcia, WVWD’s Division 1 Director. “As a result of these grants, students have been educated in the importance of water conservation and will carry that knowledge to their family, peers, and communities.”
The WEWAC Edubucks Program awards kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms with up to $1,200 for water-related educational software, activities, or supplies. This year, six out of 10 winning classrooms are located within WVWD’s service area and include Kordyak Elementary School (Fontana), Trapp Elementary School (Rialto), Fitzgerald Elementary School (Rialto), Morgan Elementary School (Rialto), Morris Elementary School (Colton) and Hughbanks Elementary School (Rialto).
