Last Sunday in the early morning hours, the County Sheriff’s Department was called out to a crash on La Crosse Avenue just north of Barton Road. Upon arrival to the scene, the deputies found a damaged power pole, but the vehicle had driven away. After further investigation, the deputies located a vehicle license plate that gave them information about the alleged suspected hit and run driver. The plate led them to a nearby home, where the alleged suspect Jonathan Bennette, 23 was found hiding in the backyard. When the deputies approach Bennette, he began to fight with them and one of the deputies was hit in the face. He faked that he was going to pass out, and grabbed for the deputies night stick and then ran off. More sheriff deputies arrived on the scene and helped to find the suspect hiding in a wash. Once subdued, he was then driven to the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga to be booked on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, driving under the influence and hit-and-run. Bennette seemed to be under the influence of alcohol, the deputies alleged in their written statements.
