The seniors who visit the Luque Community Center were given a taste of paradise as the center hosted a luau for them Thursday morning, June 12th. Staff and volunteers were present to host it, providing food and drinks, as well as activities that included the making of paper flower leis and hula dancing. Lisa Harris, a staff member overseeing the luau, said “this is our first time holding a luau.” Once enough people had come, a lunch was served. The primary course were finger sandwiches and pink-lemonade, with soft fruits and Jello as sides. Staff and volunteers served the seniors, while making sure that they were satisfied. Low music played in the background and when not making a paper lei, it was essentially a social day for the seniors, most of whom knew each other well. Visitors Susan Campos and Rachel Avila have been visiting for at least a year. When asked how she had learned of the event, Campos said “I heard about it yesterday.” All in all, there was a general air of relaxation and pleasantry. With good service and pleasant visitors, the Center will undoubtedly try something else exciting for the community it serves.
