Students in Colton Joint Unified School District’s San Salvador Preschool had a surprise visitor last week – Santa Claus! Santa stopped by to share holiday joy and something else very special: Books! Each child at the school received a book of their own from Santa. The books were donated by California State University, San Bernardino. The Colton Joint Unified School District is committed to ensuring that students are reading at grade level by the third grade. This goal also is reflected in the San Bernardino County Community Cradle to Career Roadmap. Melissa Williamson, Director of Child Development for the Colton Joint Unified School District noted that early literacy is essential to future success. “Experts tell us that 90% of all brain development occurs by the age of five. There is never a more crucial time than now to develop the lifelong passion of reading in our preschoolers.”
