COLTON >> Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC), in partnership with Reach Out/Inland Coalition, hosted 40 students from Colton High School's Health Education Academy of Learning (HEAL) on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The session included a presentation on the healthcare industry, followed by group breakouts with a discussion of ethics in healthcare settings, interview skills, and a tour of the hospital.
The HEAL program is a four-year college preparatory program that operates as a specialized learning community within the high school and combines academic coursework with clinical instruction. The curriculum includes service learning projects, job shadowing, and internships in the community. The mission of HEAL is to place students on a path that prepares them for college while developing the skills essential for employment in the healthcare industry.
ARMC, along with the County of San Bernardino, is committed to partnering with all sectors of the community to support the success of every child from cradle to career. This ongoing partnership with HEAL has provided students with an exceptional opportunity to experience the healthcare field firsthand.
“As a leader in healthcare in our region and an avid supporter of San Bernardino County’s Cradle to Career efforts, one of ARMC’s community outreach priorities is to support students interested in pursuing careers in the medical professions,” said Zack Tucker, President of the ARMC Foundation. “By exposing students to the many career options in the healthcare field, we hope we can encourage them to pursue a healthcare-based education, and to ultimately make a positive impact on the shortage of such professionals in our region through this program.”
The Inland Coalition, which helped coordinate the event, serves both San Bernardino and Riverside counties and the Pomona Valley region in collaboration with area health entities to promote diversity and education in the health professions.
ARMC is a 456-bed university-affiliated teaching hospital located on a 70-acre campus and is a designated Level II trauma center. ARMC operates a regional burn center, primary stroke center, a behavioral health center, four primary care centers including three family health centers, and provides more than 40 outpatient specialty care services.
