In Loving Memory of... "Hubert Jordan Grant," October 12, 1931 - June 3, 2015

Hugh J. Grant was born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Hugh Frederick Grant and Edrie Grey Grant, née Curtis, on October 12, 1931. He was the first of two children; his younger brother is John Phillip Grant. The family moved to Jacksonville, Florida when he was a baby and stayed there until World War II. Hugh graduated from Fresno University in California with a B.A. in Criminology in 1954 and then went to work at Richard Oil as a Lab Tester before being drafted in the Army in 1955. Hugh was sent to France to serve out his duty for his country, and in 1957 he exited the Army and married Pauline, a Dutch girl whom he met on a train ride to Paris. Not realizing she could understand English, he went on and on about her beauty to his Army buddy. Hugh and Pauline were wed in Rotterdam, Holland, over 57 years ago. The couple returned to Bakersfield, California, and Hugh applied for a job in Sacramento where he worked in the corrections field and then received his Masters Degree in Public Administration in 1966. He then went on to receive a PhD. in Government Works. In 1967, Hugh and Pauline gave birth to their only daughter, Francina Elaine Grant (now Francina Flaherty) and then Hugh went back East to Burlington, Vermont to run a penal institution as its superintendent. After three years at this position, Hugh returned to Grand Terrace, California in 1970 to go to work for the County of San Bernardino under the County Administrator for the Law and Justice Agency as an analyst where he coordinated all criminal justice departments. He left the County in 1981 and proceeded go to work in Norco as a correctional counselor until he retired in 1992. Other Accomplishments in his life were: * Served on the Grand Terrace City Council from 1978-1982 * Served Grand Terrace as its third mayor for two terms, from 1982-1987 * Served as District Governor in the Lions Club, 2002-2003 * Presented the Melvin Jones Award in Lions Club * Was a two-time Grand Jury representative * Served on the Omnitrans Board of Directors Pauline, Francina, granddaughter Madeline Flaherty and grandson F. Ayrton Flaherty invite all of Hugh’s friends to attend his funeral at Montecito Chapel in San Bernardino on Friday June 19, 2015 at 1 p.m. Burial services to follow.
