On Friday, May 23rd, the Hutton Community Center in Colton hosted the Senior Corps division of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to address and inform senior citizens of the community center about being prepared during a disaster. The main mission for the Senior Corps is to provide aid to senior citizens in communities while promoting a sense of community. Leading the event was Chairman David Nalbach along with volunteer Oscar Límon as they shared how to prepare if a disaster were to happen. The state of California faces several destructive natural disasters including fires, earthquakes, mud slides, and heavy winds that can disrupt an entire community. Throughout the informative session, Nalbach and Límon addressed the senior citizens of how to prepare, prevent damage, and what to do in case a disaster strikes their home. They both discussed the importance of having an emergency kit located in everyone’s home that contains vital necessities such as water, food, extra clothing, instructions on how to operate life-saving devices including fire extinguishers, and emergency resources including government agencies, radio stations, and more. The organization hopes that by having Senior Corps speak to the senior citizens at Hutton Community Center, locals will be better prepared in the case of a natural disaster.
