Dr. Joseph V. Davis III, a general surgeon and program director of the General Surgery Residency Program at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, recently was selected as the winner of the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) 2013 Mentor of the Year award. Established in 2005, the Mentor of the Year award honors those who help shape the future of the osteopathic medical professions through their involvement with students and young osteopathic physicians (DOs). DOs are fully licensed to practice medicine in all specialty areas, including surgery. They are trained to consider the health of the whole person and to use their hands to help diagnose and treat their patients. Dr. Davis, a resident of Etiwanda, was selected for the award from more than 175 mentors nominated from throughout the United States. “It is such an honor that a group of young osteopathic physicians whom I mentored nominated me for this award,” said Dr. Davis, who was nominated by ARMC resident physicians Drs. Sadia Khan and Erin Lin and former ARMC resident Dr. Nojan Toomari. Since 2000, when he was appointed as the director of ARMC’s General Surgery Residency Program, Dr. Davis has spent countless hours mentoring osteopathic medical students and DOs. “It has been a pleasure to share my experiences as an osteopathic physician with future generations of DOs through the years,” said Dr. Davis, a surgeon since 1988. “I hope that my fellow mentors have the same rewarding experience.” “Dr. Davis not only is a great surgeon, he is a wonderful teacher, as this award exemplifies,” said Dr. Dev GnanaDev, Chairman of the Department of Surgery at ARMC and President of Arrowhead Community Surgical Medical Group, Inc. “His terrific work with young doctors will have a lasting impact.” The AOA serves as the primary certifying body for DOs, is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical schools, and has federal authority to accredit hospitals and other health care facilities.
