Students across the Colton Joint Unified School District have been creating valentines for veterans to let our service men and women know they are cared for. The valentines will be shared with local veterans, an effort that is being coordinated by the District with the help of Congressman Pete Aguilar. “They’ll love us for giving these to them,” stated 8-year-old Isaac Herrera, a second grader at Cooley Ranch Elementary School. “They do a lot for us and we want to make them happy,” added 7-year-old Tiffany Wells. “Some of them get hurt and so we made cards for them that say thank you for helping us and thank you for doing good things for us.” Cooley Ranch teacher, Dr. Eunice Moore, noted that the project is part of an ongoing social studies unit on how one person can make a difference in the world. Before making the cards, students "learned what a veteran is and also how veterans made the ultimate sacrifice just for them." Paul Rogers Elementary School student Mayha Gonzalez, 8, also was busy making valentine’s day cards for veterans this week. “It’s important to me because the veterans have been doing lots of stuff for us. It’s time for us to do something for them.” “They fought for our country and they protected us and they protected our country,” added classmate Isaac Aldana. Teacher Jennifer Thompson said she encourages her students to do things for veterans year-round. They also have made things for them at Christmas and other holidays as well as at valentine’s day. “We need to support them as much as we can,” she said.
