As temperatures have risen and will remain in the high double digits, the City of Colton is offering four cooling centers to help residents beat the heat. The Gonzales, Luque and Hutton community centers are designated cooling centers, as well as the Colton Public Library. Under extreme conditions, hours of operation may be extended. The Gonzales Center, 670 Colton Avenue, is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Luque Center, 292 E. O Street, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Hutton Community Center, 660 Colton Avenue, is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Colton Public Library, 656 North Ninth Street, is open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. The City of Colton's Community Services Department offers these hot weather tips: * Drink plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. * Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun's rays. * Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Postpone outdoor games and activities. * Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat. * Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone who are more likely to be affected by the heat. * Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
