SAN BERNARDINO >> Clare Weber, who has more than 30 years' leadership experience in higher education and the private sector, has been appointed to the newly created position of deputy provost at Cal State San Bernardino.

Weber, who currently serves as the associate vice president for faculty affairs and development at Cal State Dominguez Hills, will join the CSUSB campus on Aug. 14, said Shari McMahan, the vice president for academic affairs and provost.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Weber join our campus,” McMahan said. “Clare brings extensive experience in working with faculty on a variety of programs and issues. I’m confident she will have the support of the campus community as she advances Academic Affairs and our campus as a whole. I look forward to working with her."

“I would also like to extend my personal appreciation and thanks to Professor Rong Chen, who has done an outstanding job as interim associate provost of Academic Programs,” McMahan said.

“I’m delighted and honored to serve as the founding deputy provost and associate provost for academic programs in close partnership with Provost McMahan and under the leadership of President Morales,” Weber said. “I look forward to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to ensure the greatness of the academic programs at CSUSB. The university plays a vital role for first generation students in the Inland Empire who want to fulfill their dream of obtaining a college degree. For this reason, and many others, I'm excited to become a Coyote.”

At CSU Dominguez Hills, Weber was responsible for a number of academically related programs, personnel services for faculty, and faculty development. Among her efforts, Weber oversaw the Faculty Development Center, including the management of Title V funding and key components of an Innovation in Higher Education Grant.

As a leader on the CSUDH WASC Steering Committee, she developed processes for campus input into the criteria for review and self-study report. She also served as department chair of sociology, program coordinator of Women's Studies, vice president of the Dominguez Hills chapter of the California Faculty Association, and chair of the Academic Senate Faculty Policy Committee.

Prior to joining academia, Weber was a human rights investigator in Central America during the civil wars of the 1980s, a regional coordinator for the international human rights organization Witness for Peace. She also coordinated a campaign to legalize street vending in Los Angeles. She has consulted with nonprofit organizations on program evaluation and strategic planning both locally and internationally.

Weber earned her Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine in social science, an M.A. in Latin American Studies from California State University, Los Angeles, and a bachelor’s degree  in sociology and Spanish from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y.
