Colton Youth Soccer Organization, an affiliate of the California Youth Soccer Association-South (CYSA-S), sent four all-star girls teams to compete in the CYSA-S District Five President’s Cup tournament in Apple Valley the first weekend of January. The league sent all-star teams from the league’s under 10, 12 and 14 divisions. Of those teams, only the U10 “B” team emerged as champions. They were a team that might not have even participated in the tournament if not for the support of the team’s coaches. The league was only able to pay for one team in each division and at the all-star selection meeting, coaches Felix Arroyo and Steven Ramirez felt that there were just too many worthy girls “left on the table” to not ask the league and district if they could send a second team. The league would support and register the team but the registration fee and uniforms had to be paid by the team, the coaches agreed. Colton Youth Soccer submitted a request to the tournament directors for a second under 10 team and the district was able to accept the second team. The road to the championship began with wins against Wildomar (1-0), Palm Desert (2-1) and Yucaipa (3-0). In its championship game, the girls played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time and the game went into four five minute overtime quarters with the victory going to the first team to score. At the end of each quarter, one girl was removed from the field. The game remained tied at the end of the overtime period and a “shoot-out” would determine the winner. Colton’s goalie, Zamantha Moctezuma, blocked each Victorville attempt, giving Colton the win on its shoot-out goal. The final score read Colton: 2, Victorville: 1. The girls will now travel to Palm Desert to compete in the Tournament of Champions on Jan. 25 against Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Temecula. The girls and their recreational teams are: Emma Arroyo (Pixie Chicks); Diana Fernandez (Lady Panthers); Aja Guillen (Pixie Chicks); Aurora Lopez (Barcelona Girls); Zamantha Moctezuma (Pixie Chicks); Liana Moreno (Barcelona Girls); Alyssa Navarro (Lady Panthers); Anissa Navarro (Lady Panthers); Jackie Pacheco (Lady Panthers); Anise Welton (Sharpshooters). The coaches are: Felix Arroyo (Pixie Chicks); Steven Ramirez (Lady Panthers) and Amie Arroyo (Pixie Chicks).
