Early Monday morning on Oct. 7, 20 firefighters from San Bernardino County Fire were called to the scene when they received multiple calls of smoke coming from an abandoned commercial building in the 18700 block of 6th Street in Bloomington. The first arriving fire units reported smoke coming from the roofline of an approximate 3,000 square-foot single-story commercial building. Additional units arrived shortly after and through an aggressive ventilation and interior firefighting operation, the fire was contained in 30 minutes. Firefighters were successful in preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. Firefighters were initially slowed by security doors on the structure and while operating on the interior, experienced a partial ceiling collapse. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by San Bernardino County Fire Investigators. The damage to the building is estimated to be $20,000. The San Bernardino County Fire Department reminds residents to replace smoke detector batteries annually; the best chance of surviving a fire in your home is having a working smoke detector.
