At a recent December meeting of the Colton City Council, Council Member Dr. Luis S. Gonzalez (Dr. G) presented a proclamation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6476, in honor of service to our country.
The local post is located at the corner of 8th St. and Orange St., and has been in existence approximately 50 years. They currently have 150 members and sponsor several community events including a Christmas party for kids, bicycle give-a-way, and a car show.
On a national level, the VFW traces its roots to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War founded this organization in order to secure rights, benefits and medical care for those who arrived home. Since then the VFW has been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, the GI Bill, the national cemetery system, war memorials, college scholarships, volunteer services, and support services for veterans.
