Colton>> Otter Brook Trail of Colton offers various scenic trails and is home to many hikers who explore the wonders of the wilderness. On August 3,2017, The Department of Conservation (DEC) forest rangers rescued fatigued hikers on Otter Brook Trail. Disorientation of coordinate location and dehydration are common symptoms that many hikers have recently been experiencing when on the extravagant paths of the trails.

The incident happened around 9:50 a.m. when DEC received a call from an injured 19-year old hiker. Three officers quickly responded and were able to stabilize and ensure the safety of the hiker and his companion.

Forest Rangers Will Benzel, Adam Baldwin, and Jared Booth quickly arrived on the scene and moved them back to the trail head on all-terrain-vehicles.

The subjects then received a courtesy ride back to Wanakena and their vehicle.

The hikers chose to seek medical attention on their own, DEC said. The extravagant views of the Otter Brook Trail should be explored with caution, especially with high temperatures that are known to cause harm during the dry weather season. By constantly hydrating, staying fueled and exploring trails at a cool time, the exccursion will not only be enjoyable but safe as well.
