Twenty-four senior members of the Luque Community Center’s 50+ Club had a chance to sample sweet fruits during the Luque Community Center’s Fruit Festival last Friday morning, July 19. Seniors got to sample a variety of fruits that included strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, green and orange cantaloupe and the Santa Claus melon, stated Lisa Harris, the Luque Community Center’s Recreation Specialist. The event was held at no cost to the seniors, she noted. “The fruits were all purchased by the City,” she said. The Fruit Festival is part of a series of once-a-month events put on for the seniors at the Luque Center throughout the year, said Harris. “Our goal is to get them involved and get them talking. With the fruits, they had the chance to discuss the textures and the tastes. We want them to do things like this so they can communicate with each other and have fun,” said Harris. Next month’s event will be a scrapbooking event, where seniors will be encouraged to bring with them photographs to place into a scrapbook, which they will have the opportunity to decorate, Harris said. The scrapbooking event will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Luque Community Center, 292 East O St. in Colton.
