Seven people were arrested during a recent traffic check conducted in Colton and several others issued citations for various vehicle code violations.
A total 200 vehicles were screened by members of the Colton Police Department's traffic unit's DUI/Drivers License checkpoint at the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Olive avenues between 9 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Of the seven arrests made, two were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol, one arrested for illegal drug possession and four arrested on other criminal charges which Colton police did not specify.
Through the evening, 26 total citations were issued; 12 of those were to drivers without a valid state drivers' license and three were issued to drivers with suspended licenses.
"According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent," a release issued from the police department states.
Future DUI/Drivers License checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols will take place in the upcoming weeks, in the Colton police's "ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways," according to the release.
