On Saturday, April 16, over 150 sixth-grade students from Colton Joint Unified School District (CJUSD) participated in this year's Cal State University San Bernardino's (CSUSB) "Making it Happen" event. This is just one example of how the collaborative efforts of the CJUSD elementary counselors make a positive impact on the lives of our youth. As a team, the elementary counselors are proud to be setting the foundation for college and career readiness for our students. Collectively, the elementary school counseling team chose nine different elementary schools to participate in this event. These schools include Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Cooley Ranch Elementary, Gerald Smith Elementary, Mary B.Lewis Elementary, Alice Birney Elementary, Rogers Elementary, Abraham Lincoln Elementary, Michael D’arcy Elementary, and Sycamore Hills Elementary. First place winner of the College Making it Happen art contest was Annabelle Solano, sixth-grade second place was another district and third place went to sixth-grader, Maria Rivera. College Making it Happen was designed to help families and students understand the importance of early academic and financial preparation for college. In addition, the CSUSB Sociology Club supported the students of CJUSD as they offered to answer any questions throughout this event. Students were also encouraged to participate in the art contest in which students were asked to do an original piece of artwork depicting what they believed college would look like. Students were able to earn prizes and the first place winner not only won a $100 gift card to Barnes & Noble but their artwork will also be used for the event flyer for College Making it Happen 2017. We are proud to announce that students from Alice Birney won both first and third place in this art contest.
