California Theater Closes its Doors

The City of San Bernardino has announced the temporary closure of its historic California Theater for the Performing Arts, effective June 2, as it embarks on an extensive $6.8 million renovation project. This beloved venue, known for its impressive 1,700-seat capacity, serves as the home of the San Bernardino Symphony and hosts a variety of concerts and nationally touring Broadway productions. The theater is anticipated to reopen its doors in early October, much to the excitement of the local arts community.

Originally built in 1928, the California Theater is not only a cultural landmark but also a recognized entity on the National Register of Historic Places. Earlier this year, it was honored with the title of “Best Performing Arts Venue” by Inland Empire Magazine, reflecting its significance in the region's artistic landscape.

The planned renovations aim to enhance the theater-going experience while ensuring that necessary updates are made to this historic building, which has stood for nearly a century. Key improvements will include an overhaul of the theatrical sound system, lighting, and curtain controls, ensuring that performances are delivered with the highest quality.

Further enhancements will involve upgrades to the auditorium floor, refinishing it to maintain its historical integrity, as well as improvements to the street front facade, giving the theater a refreshed exterior appearance. The theater's heating and air conditioning systems will be replaced, which will improve comfort for audiences and performers alike. Other updates will consist of new carpeting throughout the venue, fresh interior and exterior painting, and enhancements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Architectural finishes and repairs will also be integrated to preserve the theater's historical charm while elevating its aesthetic appeal.

In addition to the upcoming renovations, the restoration of the theater’s Wurlitzer Style 216 pipe organ was completed earlier this year. Originally installed when the theater first opened in 1928, this organ is one of only a few Wurlitzer organs remaining in the world, representing a significant piece of musical history.

Work on the $6,830,686 project is being performed by Tilden Coil Constructors and is being funded using City Measure S funds, Cultural Development funds, and a $2.5 million grant from the California Arts Council.

As the renovation progresses, the City of San Bernardino invites the community to look forward to a revitalized California Theater that will continue to serve as a cultural hub for years to come. With these enhancements, the theater aims to provide an enjoyable and accessible environment for all attendees, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of the performing arts in the Inland Empire.
