Colton Police Instructs R.O.P. Students

The Colton Police Department, in conjunction with the Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa Regional Occupation Program, instructed numerous local students from various schools in the community on several police-related functions. This was all part of a middle school career exploration camp called Extreme Summer Camp, a program facilitated through the CRY R.O.P. program, which is geared around math and science preparing the students for a career in those applied fields. The activities at the police department were conducted on three different occasions where students participated for approximately four hours before going to lunch with Colton police officers. At the Colton Police Department, the students were taught how to fingerprint a crime scene as they analyzed the different fingerprint loops and whorls. After the classroom instruction there was a mock crime scene set up outside in the police department’s back parking lot, this is where the students were able to dust for prints and lift the prints off of a surface. The students were also instructed on how to work Lidar and Radar detection which the department currently uses for traffic enforcement. The Radar and Lidar portion of the instruction came with a full demonstration on both instruments. In addition to the activities, the students were given a full tour of the police department and explained the various functions of each division. The second half of their day was spent at the Colton Fire Department doing activities there as well.
