U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency responsible for securing U.S. borders from all threats, is now accepting applications nationwide to fill 2,000 additional officer positions at air, land and sea ports across the country. As a result of funding provided in the fiscal year 2014 budget, 44 ports in 18 states will receive additional staffing to enhance security, help reduce wait times, and facilitate growing volumes of legitimate goods and travelers. As a key asset component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s frontline defense, a CBP officer’s primary responsibility is to detect and prevent terrorists, their weapons and other threats from entering the U.S. while facilitating legitimate trade and travel. This requires enforcing over 400 laws related to trade, contraband, agricultural pests and diseases, and admissibility of individuals. These newly-hired CBP officers are expected to deploy to 44 ports in 18 states including New York; Los Angeles; Detroit; Buffalo, New York; Houston; Dallas; Chicago; Las Vegas; Laredo, Texas; Nogales, Arizona; and New Orleans. CBP officers are federal law enforcement officers required to wear uniforms and carry firearms in the performance of their duties. They carry out a full range of inspection, passenger and cargo analysis, examination and law enforcement activities related to the arrival and departure of travelers, merchandise and conveyances such as cars, trucks, aircraft and ships at U.S. ports of entry. An applicant for the CBP officer position must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of the U.S for the past three years; must be referred for selection prior to their 37th birthday (or a preference eligible veteran, or have prior civilian federal law enforcement experience); and have a valid driver’s license. In addition, applicants must pass an entrance examination, medical examination, physical fitness assessments, video-based test and/or structured interview, drug test, background investigation and polygraph examination. For selected candidates, CBP offers paid training to fully prepare them for a career in federal law enforcement, the opportunity to serve the country, and a competitive salary and benefits package. CBP utilizes the knowledge, skills and abilities gained through their time serving on the front lines. Nearly 30 percent of CBP employees are military veterans. CBP is an equal opportunity employer and encourages women and minorities to apply so that the agency can create a workforce that reflects the diversity of America. To apply for the CBP officer position, applicants must have an active USA Jobs account and complete an online application at www.usajobs.gov.
