COLTON>> After serving in the army 45 years ago, James R. Genel, a lifetime resident of Colton and army veteran, received recognition from Colton with an installation of a military banner. Family and friends gathered together in support of Genel and his service to the country. "It was an honor," he said. Genel was drafted into the army in 1969 and was sent to Vietnam until 1971, where he served in the central highlands. Since then, Genel worked for Southern California Gas Co. for 36 years until he retired. He is married to his wife, Diane, for 43 years and has two sons, John James and James John. "All of his family and friends were just so proud," Diane said. "We are thankful for his service and that he is home safe. The banner is located directly south of 425 S. Rancho Ave. on the west side of the street. Genel said he would like to thank his family and friends in joining him on the special day. Genel is a member of Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post 6476 and was a member of the Honor Guard. For fun, he is planning trips with his wife and mom, Catalina, in his motorhome.
