Books, Books, and More Books!

In search of something new to read? On the hunt for an old classic? People who came to the annual book sale held by the Friends of the Colton Public Library were able to do just that on April 19, as part of national library week. All books available for sale were donated by people or came from the library itself. The selections came from all genres and many diverse authors, with something for every age group. There are even a large number of magazines for those who like to collect issues, and the price was very reasonable; 50 cents would buy a paperback and $1 would buy a hardcover book. The books are laid out on tables and those who buy in bulk are given a box to carry them in. Overseeing the event were the President of the organization, Linda Tripp, and the Vice President, Rosemary Spear, with the Treasurer Pamela Chavez and member Jim Tripp lending a hand. Linda Tripp was very proud of their event, saying “every penny we make goes back into the library.” She also explained that while most of their books come from donations by community residents, some also come from the library itself; “Say a book hasn’t been checked out in 4 years, they’ll pull it off the shelf.” So rather than dispose of the book, they give it a chance to find its way to an owner who will enjoy it. Of course, selling is not the only way they distribute the books. According to Linda Tripp, they also take the books to seniors, giving them another way to interact with their grand kids. Though this was the annual sale, President Tripp expressed a desire to hold at least one more before the end of the year. “We might hold one in December,” she said. People who missed this one may have another opportunity to find something special to read in the future.
