Mariachi and Sons Play for Colton

Last Sunday, July 21, the Mariachi and Sons band played for residents of Colton through rain and shine. The concert was part of Colton’s National Park and Recreation 31 Days of Play Month, and was one of five concerts that will be performed in the Concerts in the Parks series over the course of five different Sunday evenings at Colton’s Fleming Park. Residents broke out their umbrellas when the rain began to pour down during Mariachi and Sons’ performance, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying the opening act of the concert series, an event that has been going on for more than 15 years, and has grown a loyal following of participants throughout the years. “We come every year on every Sunday. I love the entertainment; I watched The Flamingo Band last year and they are one of my favorites. They give us a chance to get up and dance while they play,” said resident Rachel Silva. The event offered its guests tacos, kettle corn and fresh lemonade to enjoy during the concert. There was also a jump house and race track for children to play on. During intermission, locals enjoyed a performance by the Mexicali Folklórico, a group organized by the Colton Community Services Department, whose dance and routine was right in line with the Latin theme of the evening. The concert series is organized by the Colton Community Services Department and proceeds from the event are donated toward sponsoring kids for many of the programs that the Parks and Recreation Department in Colton has available. Kelly Phelps, one event organizer, commented on the value of the concerts to the community. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to come out and enjoy themselves and a great way to connect with friends to create lasting memories,” Phelps said. In the weeks to come, Latin Flair, a band that plays a from a long list of salsa, cumbia and merengue style music, Jane’s X, Ray & The Rhythm Beat Band, and The Flamingo Band, who play from a variety of different genres, will also be performing throughout the summer.
