"Garden Elegance” Big Hit For Local Flower and Garden Enthusiasts

On Saturday March 15, The Hutton Community Center turned into the most beautiful display of flowers, plants and citrus fruits. Now in its tenth year, the Riverside/San Bernardino Orchid Society and Riverside Flower Show Association once again joined together to create an impressive exhibition of plants, flowers, and colorful floral arrangements to the delight of garden enthusiasts and the general public.

The show ran 10:00am-4:00pm which was preceded by a very intense judging period when over 200 entries were evaluated for form, beauty and display. Several awards were given at the close of the event but the real winner was the City of Colton. With the excellent attendance, and large-scale participation the city not only welcomed many new enthusiasts, but ushered in a new and growing sense of floral appreciation in the community. To elaborate on this point, the newly established Colton 50+ Garden Club was a first-time participant and not only submitted flower and garden entries, but have quickly become engaged with the area Flower Show Associations. “It’s amazing how this group has ‘blossomed,’” says event coordinator Ron Lang, who went on to explain, “They just started the group in February and have already become an active partner.”

Upon entering the exhibition, attendees were met with the most “colorful” welcome of dazzling lavender orchids, a pleasant smile from the host/hostess, and a beautiful large-scale exhibit hall display of colorful flowers, plants, citrus, photos, and poster boards. Of course, the most popular attraction was the large array of exquisite floral arrangements, which always leaves the viewer in wonder.

From the opening judging session, to the final announcement of the Grand Prize winner, the attendees had plenty of opportunities to fully take-in the beauty of first class floral design and arrangements. “This is a very unique event, and we are delighted to bring it to Colton,” smiled Linda Lang, who co-coordinated the event with her husband Ron.

In addition to the opening judging session and the beautiful displays, piano music was provided during the event by Dr.G, Colton Council Member and community advocate. “Setting the mood is important for this event,” described Ron Lang who added, “Attendees also had the opportunity to attend and participate in one of the educational presentations.”  He was referring to three classes: How to Make Hypertufa Pots, Basic Caning Skills, and Planting Fairy Gardens. These classes were free of charge and were presented with a “hands-on” approach. Lunch was served for all participants.

The Garden Festival and Flower Show were a complete success. Ron and Linda Lang and their Associations are to be congratulated for their success in hosting this Flower Show. This event is one of the “hidden gems” in our city and we certainly hope they will continue offering this unique event for years to come.

Anyone who is interested in flowers, plants and gardening techniques is invited to attend one of the many activities planned throughout the year. For more information about the Master Gardeners Club contact Linda Lang @ 951-663-5237
