Honoring Service, Celebrating Nature: Free National Park Day

Each year, Veterans Day offers Americans a chance to pause and honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, the National Park Service (NPS) will once again open its gates free of charge to everyone in recognition of Veterans Day — a meaningful tribute that connects gratitude with the great outdoors.

Veterans Day Free Entrance Day invites the public to visit any of the nation’s more than 400 national parks, monuments, and historical sites without paying an entrance fee. This initiative honors the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of veterans, active-duty service members, and their families — while giving all Americans the chance to reflect and reconnect with the natural and historical treasures that define our nation.

From the towering peaks of Joshua Tree National Park to the quiet history of local military memorials, the Inland Empire and its surrounding regions offer unforgettable places to explore.

Residents of the Inland Empire are uniquely positioned to enjoy several nearby national parks and recreation areas that participate in the free-entry event, including:

  • Joshua Tree National Park – Just a short drive from San Bernardino and Riverside counties, Joshua Tree’s stunning desert landscape provides the perfect place to hike, photograph, and reflect in peace.
  • Mojave National Preserve – Explore vast sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, and Joshua tree forests while honoring the spirit of freedom and endurance.
  • Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area – Ideal for those who want scenic trails and ocean views without venturing too far west.
  • Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego – Learn about early explorers and enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific, perfect for a Veterans Day getaway.

Each of these sites tells part of America’s story — one that includes the resilience and service of those who have worn the uniform.

While admission is free for everyone on November 11, the National Park Service continues to offer free lifetime passes to U.S. military veterans and annual passes for active-duty service members and their dependents. These programs ensure that the nation’s natural beauty and historical landmarks remain accessible to those who have protected them.

“Our national parks belong to everyone, and on Veterans Day, we’re reminded of the freedoms that make this possible,” said an NPS spokesperson in a recent statement. “It’s our way of saying thank you.”

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, pack water, wear layers, and check park websites for any seasonal updates or restrictions. Because entrance fees are waived, popular locations like Joshua Tree may experience higher-than-normal attendance.
