Keep Colton Clean & Beautiful Brings Community Volunteers Together to Give Veterans Park a Fresh Start

A cleaner park can begin with something as simple as a pair of gloves, a trash bag and a few hours donated by neighbors who care about their community.

Colton residents will have an opportunity to put that idea into action when the City's Keep Colton Clean & Beautiful program brings volunteers together at Veterans Park, 290 E. O Street, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The community cleanup will focus on improving the appearance of one of Colton's neighborhood parks through hands-on volunteer work. According to the City, participants will help pick up litter, sweep walkways, refresh picnic areas and give additional attention to the playground. Cleanup supplies will be provided, and City staff will be available to coordinate the effort.

The event is part of Colton's broader Keep Colton Clean & Beautiful effort, which encourages residents to become directly involved in caring for the public spaces they share.

While a three-hour cleanup may seem like a small undertaking, organized volunteer projects can make a visible difference. Parks experience constant use from children, families, walkers and community groups. Litter, leaves and other debris can accumulate quickly, particularly around playgrounds, picnic areas and heavily traveled walkways.

Bringing volunteers together allows those smaller maintenance needs to receive concentrated attention while also giving residents an opportunity to take greater ownership of their neighborhood.

Veterans Park is an especially fitting location for the effort. As a community gathering place, its condition affects the experience of everyone who visits. A clean playground gives children a more welcoming place to play, maintained picnic areas make family gatherings more enjoyable, and cleaner pathways improve the overall appearance of the park.

The project also offers residents a practical way to volunteer close to home. Instead of requiring specialized skills or a long-term commitment, community cleanups allow people to contribute a morning of their time and see the results of their work almost immediately.

For teenagers and other participants seeking community-service experience, the event can also provide an introduction to civic involvement. A young volunteer who spends a Saturday morning cleaning a neighborhood park may come away with a better understanding that maintaining a community is a shared responsibility.

The benefits can extend beyond the cleanup itself. When residents work alongside neighbors they may not otherwise meet, a maintenance project becomes a community-building activity. Families, students, longtime residents and other volunteers can work toward the same goal while strengthening connections to the city they call home.

Colton is also encouraging businesses interested in supporting future cleanup projects to become involved, creating another avenue for the local business community to contribute to neighborhood improvement efforts.

Programs such as Keep Colton Clean & Beautiful demonstrate that improving a city does not always require a massive construction project. Sometimes progress is much more immediate: a cleaner walkway, a refreshed picnic area, a playground free of litter or a group of neighbors willing to spend a Saturday morning making their community look better.

When volunteers arrive at Veterans Park on September 26, their work will be about more than collecting trash. It will be an investment of time and effort into a public space that belongs to the entire community.

And when the final bags are collected and the volunteers head home, the results will remain for the families, children and neighbors who use Veterans Park every day.
