Local Cub Scouts Hosts Community Day Camp

One of the most impressive youth organizations in our beloved community of Colton is the local Cub Scouts, sponsored by Boy Scouts of America. Last week, 22 boys and girls gathered at the Fiesta Village Party Central to participate in a 4-day community day camp.

Throughout the four days, all of the campers, K through 5th grade, were involved in a variety of positive and constructive activities; including crafts, art, service, puzzles, painting, t-shirt design, party bags, cooperative games, and much more. “This is truly a win for our community,” touted Isabel Salas, one of the parent leaders of the scout troop.

On the last day of the camp, each camper had a chance to enter their “creation” in a highly anticipated box car competition, culminating in the grand finale – Box Car Race. With their creative ideas put to the test, the competition first included an examination of car construction making sure the cars would run successfully on the official box car track. The next step was to evaluate the design. This was a difficult choice as each car was a unique reflection of the camper’s personality. Some had stickers, some had drawings, some included lettering and all of them were beautifully painted.

Once the first two stages were complete, the entire camp; including kids, parents, and leaders headed out to the Fiesta Village picnic area for the big race. Using an official 25-foot box car race track, all the cars lined up at the top and ran the downhill race track with everyone cheering on their favorite cars. After several exciting heats, the campers lined up for the awards. Emily was the final winner – Congratulations!

The local Cub Scouts, under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America, have a rich history of positive youth engagement, community service, and constructive activities. District Executive, Lonnie Estrada commented, “The goal is to teach kids to be positive citizens,” and went on to elaborate, “teaching of skills is important with an emphasis on parent support.”

The leaders and parents of this event are to be congratulated for their fine organization, collaboration, and positive outcome. This event was a valuable experience for our Colton youth and kids from the surrounding areas.
