Protect Our Burros

By City of Moreno Valley, Moreno Valley’s wild burros are a beloved community treasure.

Although they are rugged, strong and can withstand any of Southern California’s weather conditions, the burros face danger every day due to humans. So it’s up to us to protect them.  Here’s how you can help:

  • DO NOT FEED THE BURROS. They are wild animals. Feeding burros takes away their natural instinct to forage for food, and reduces their natural fear of people.
  • Wild burros are federally protected, meaning it’s illegal to harm or harass them in any way.
  • Do not approach the burros. They are very territorial and protective of their offspring. A kick from a burro can be fatal — appreciate them from a safe distance.
  • SLOW DOWN when driving in “burro country.” Burros don’t distinguish roads from the rest of their territory. It’s up to us to watch out for them on the road.

See an Injured Burro?

If you hit a burro or see one injured on the side of the road, call 911 so Animal Services can be dispatched.
