In December 2025, the City of Colton proudly honored the retirement of Fernando “Fernie” Velasquez, celebrating 36 years of dedicated public service — including 25 years with Colton Electric Utility. The occasion was a heartfelt tribute to a career defined by leadership, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to the Colton community.
Throughout his time with Colton Electric Utility, Fernando played an essential role in maintaining and modernizing the city’s electric system. He responded to emergency outages with calm expertise, mentored apprentices entering the trade, and helped ensure reliable service to homes and businesses across the city. Known for his steady hand and no-nonsense attitude, he earned deep respect from coworkers and residents alike.
“Fernando represents the best of what public service is all about,” said Charles Berry, Colton Electric Director. “His professionalism, teamwork, and dedication to the people of Colton have set an example for everyone who’s had the privilege to work alongside him.”
Fernando’s career began in 1989 in the City’s Sanitation Division before he transitioned to the Streets Department in 1991. In 2000, he joined Colton Electric Utility, where his dedication to the craft quickly became evident. He became a Power Line Helper in 2003, advanced to Power Line Technician Apprentice in 2007, and earned the title of Lineman in 2011. His work ethic and reliability later led to his promotion as Line Crew Supervisor.
As a supervisor, Fernando was especially passionate about developing others and strengthening the future of the utility.
“Fernando worked tirelessly to become a skilled and knowledgeable Journeyman Lineman. When he became a Line Crew Supervisor, he was determined to pass on what his years in the trade taught him. He always made sure those he led understood: he didn’t want them to be as good as him, he wanted them to be better than him,” said Abel Aguirre, Field Operations Foreman.
For decades, Fernando’s work quite literally kept the lights on for the Colton community. As he steps into retirement, the City expresses immense pride in his dedication and lasting contributions. His legacy will continue to shine through the strong system he helped build, and the many professionals he inspired along the way!
