Colton>>A local resident of Colton was honored May 31, 2017 by having a Hometown Hero Military Banner placed on the corner of 3rd Street and Valley Boulevard.

At least ten loved ones attended the ceremony near the busy street, a site that truly honored Gary Smith and his time as a military member. Known for his kind and generous acts, Smith will always be recognized for his honorable service in the Army and for the loving memories that he leaves behind.

Smith enlisted in the service December 28, 1977. During the time of geopolitical tension that remained after World War II, also known as the Cold War, his years of active duty lasted nearly three years and his time of inactive duty lasted another three years.

He was trained in the armory and transportation division and drove tanks and trucks. His colonel was one of many who took a liking to Smiths personality and work habits, and was insistent that he stay and continue to be a active military member.

Shortly after his military service, Smith began working as truck driver and continued to drive for Albertsons Company for 24 years until his ending days. Smith regrettably died December 6, 2016 at the age of 58 as he was returning home from work. He suffered from a heart attack. Smith leaves behind three children and three grandchildren as well as endless memories.

“His motto was the road goes on forever, and the party never ends,” said Sheri Smith, Gary’s wife. They were married for 38 years when he passed away, and had celebrated their last anniversary by going to Laughlin and enjoying the scenic river and hotels.

Sheri remembers the great memories with her husband and more importantly how kind he was to help others.

“He stopped when someone was broken down on the freeway, helped them changed flat tires, he even brought gas for somebody who ran out of gas,” Sheri said. “He was good guy.”

Along with being a great military service and community member, Smith would also enjoy his free time by fishing and golfing, and would have considered hunting if it weren’t for the limited resources of the sport in California.

Gary Smith leaves behind many loved ones and countless memories. His time in the military will continue to be honored through the patriotic banner that stands tall to recognize his patriotism and selfless acts that he did for others. The banner was funded by his family in remembrance of him.
