Our next $1,000 prize winner is Jim Cota, a 30 year-resident of Grand Terrace and truck driver who is gearing up for retirement in three years.
“I never thought I’d win this,” Cota said. “I thought it was a one-in-a-million.”

“This totally shocked me,” Cota sad. “I got that message and I was at work and usually I don’t answer at work and I had to play that message again and I said wait, wait a minute, let me pull over, I was actually delivering a truck, so I pulled over and I listened again, I said ‘something’s weird man, someone’s pranking me, something’s going on here, I don’t win stuff like this.’”
With Cota being a long-time resident of Grand Terrace, he has been able to witness a lot of the city’s developments, including the addition of new businesses like one of his and his wife Janis’ favorite restaurants, Woody’s Classic Grill.
“We both won a Woody’s gift card last year [in the sweepstakes],” Cota said. “We love Woody’s, I know Mike so we go there as much as we can. I told him that ‘I thought you’d be a little irritated that a regular won and he went ‘No! No!’”
Just as Cota and his wife love to support local business, he also loves to support his local newspaper, the City News.
“I love it, I’ve always tried to support City News, you know I even run some ads and things,” Cota said. “Until it went digital, I used to read the full paper, you know I read it cover to cover, everything I always did. I’ve been reading the City News for years.”
Cota says that he will be spending his winnings on his family, spending a little bit extra on his grandkids, helping out loved ones and as a definite supporter of the community, he says he will even put money back into the city.
“I’m probably going to spend a lot of this in the city here so it’ll go back into our economy,” Cota said.

We wanted to help the local businesses stay in business and in December for our $1,000 grand prize giveaway, we wanted to help a family have a nice Christmas! So, we got our heads together and came up with this program for the community.

“This is really good,” Cota said. “I was surprised also; I thought it was just at the end of the year you guys gave the thousand dollars. So now it’s monthly? Wow, you guys are something…Thank you guys.”

“I told a buddy of mine, he lives in Corona [about the sweepstakes] and he said, ‘why do you bother with that stuff’ and I said because it’s not just because I’m trying to win but it’s because I’ve read this thing since I moved here pretty much and it’s a contest, it only takes a minute, just you never know- Now look at this,” Cota smiled as he looked at his $1,000 check.
