One of the greatest joys of gardening in Southern California is the ability to grow plants nearly all year long. Our mild winters and extended summers give Inland Empire gardeners the chance to enjoy fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers in every season. Having a monthly planting calendar helps you take advantage of this unique climate and ensures your garden is always producing something new.

January – February
Cool-season crops thrive during the cooler months. This is the perfect time to plant leafy greens like lettuce, kale, and spinach, along with root vegetables such as carrots, radishes, and beets. Broccoli, cauliflower, and peas also do well now. In flower beds, pansies and snapdragons add bright winter color.

March – April
As temperatures begin to rise, it’s time to transition into warm-season planting. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, and beans can all go into the ground now. Herbs such as basil, dill, and cilantro grow well in spring’s longer days. Inland Empire gardeners should also begin mulching to protect soil moisture as summer approaches.

May – June
These are peak planting months for heat-loving crops. Corn, melons, eggplants, and pumpkins thrive in the Inland Empire’s warming soils. Citrus trees and avocados can also be planted now, giving them time to establish before the hottest weather arrives. For flowers, zinnias, marigolds, and sunflowers bring a burst of color to summer gardens.

July – August
The hottest months are more about maintenance than new planting. Use this time to protect existing crops with drip irrigation, shade cloth, and mulch. Quick-growing vegetables like bush beans or summer squash can still be sown if provided with enough water. It’s also a good season to plan ahead for fall crops.

September – October
As the weather cools, gardeners can return to planting cool-season vegetables. Lettuce, kale, broccoli, and carrots can all be seeded now. October is also an excellent month to plant perennials, roses, and California native plants, giving them time to establish roots before winter.

November – December
This is a prime time for root crops, leafy greens, and peas once again. In the Inland Empire’s mild climate, winter gardens are just as productive as spring gardens in many other parts of the country. Add compost or mulch now to enrich the soil and protect plants from the occasional cool nights.

By following a monthly planting rhythm, you maximize your garden’s potential while working in harmony with the seasons. In the Inland Empire, the secret isn’t just knowing what to plant, but when. With planning and care, your garden can be a source of fresh food, vibrant color, and joy every month of the year.
