The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools is proud to announce that two high schools within the county were recognized as Model Continuation High Schools (MCHS) for 2022.

“I want to thank educators throughout the county for diligently working to provide equitable and accessible academic opportunities for all of our students,” said County Superintendent Ted Alejandre. “We want to ensure students are equipped with tools to succeed in the classroom and beyond, and these two continuation high schools demonstrated their commitment to provide at-risk youth the comprehensive services they deserve.”

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced that Rialto Unified School District’s John H. Milor High School and Slover Mountain High School from Colton Joint Unified School District are among the 36 schools across the state receiving the honor this year.

Continuation schools provide a high school diploma program designed to meet the needs of students ages 16 through 18 who have not yet graduated from high school, are required to attend school and are at risk of not completing their education.

“This honor demonstrates a school’s commitment to support and mentor educators and their peers to provide invaluable resources for all students,” said San Bernardino County Board of Education President Ken Larson. “I am proud of our teachers and administrators who work to provide students with the support and skills for academic and social success.”

John H. Milor High School is a continuation school that has continued to increase the graduation rate and provide quality educational programs for all students. In addition to high quality instruction, the goal of the staff is to make positive personal connections with all students to provide a sense of belonging and a genuine feeling that “Success Starts Here.”

Milor is a fully accredited school as recognized by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It was designated as a Model Continuation High School in 2019, and again this year.

The main focus at Milor is to provide students with opportunities to earn their high school diploma and its program provides a unique independent service for students.

Slover Mountain High School in Colton is a past and newly designated Model Continuation High School which provides a program that addresses the needs of the whole student.

The school focuses on guiding students through their academic journey and supporting them socially, emotionally and physically. All staff members work collaboratively to ensure students graduate from Slover knowing they received a quality education that prepares them for post-secondary opportunities to attend college, trade school and/or gain employment.

Principal Tiffany Hampton said they strive to let community partners know that Alternative Education is relevant and can yield amazing results.

“When you come to Slover, you’ll understand why you can’t spell Slover without l-o-v-e,” said Hampton.

The 36 schools selected as MCHS retain their designation for three years and will be recognized at the California Continuation Education Association Plus 2022 State Conference in Long Beach, California in May.
